HOT IN ELEKTRIKA
By Aleksandar Vukelić
On June 13th, it was pretty hot in Pančevo’s Elektrika venue, during the new edition of GRRR! Program. The heat was on because of the weather conditions, but also because of so many visitors from our town, from Belgrade, and abroad.
That warm night, at the club which is a magnet to alternative artists, was the finale of the international comics festival „Novo doba“ (New Era), which was going on in several locations in Belgrade.
First the exhibition titled „Granulat“ was introduced, by „Tonto Comics“, a group of cartoonists coming from Graz. The mood was smooth, and the thing ended in a spontaneous cartoon jam session. These movers of the Austrian alternative comics scene have been guests of our town several times already.
The latest edition of Silent Wall, the street poster filled with comics, was presented by Pančevo’s „Silent Wall Army“. The poster features comics by Czech cartoonist Aneta Bendakova, and by local creators Vuk Palibrk and Boris Stanić. For the new issue of the poster, they all did strips responding to the topic of „the town“.
What followed was a pre-screening of „Tito on Ice“, a film by Max Andersson and Helena Ahonen. Max Andersson is originally from Stockholm, now residing in Berlin, and is one of the important names of the 9th art world – his comics have been published in US, France and Japan. A few years ago he published „Bosnian Flat Dog“, a graphic novel inspired by the Balkan situation, and during his research, he filmed on locations in several towns of ex -Yugoslavia, Pančevo including. His visits to Belgrade, Sarajevo, Mostar, Ljubljana, Zagreb and our town, are now part of „Tito on Ice“. It is both sad and funny- „horror“ footage is combined with elements of documentary, live action and animation, in which the author is carrying a grotesque sculpture of Josip Broz Tito in his car, and recording the reactions of the people.
After this, there was a concert by Rita Braga, from Lisbon, with our ownVuk Palibrk as an additional musician. Rita Braga works on animated films and illustration too, and her music is a mix of ethno sounds ( including American country, Greek rebetiko, Bollywood hits and even one of the Serbian traditionals) and modern, experimental stuff. By playing ukulele, an instrument originally brought by Portuguese emigrants to Hawaii, Rita was treating us with her dreamy lyric soprano and, with interventions by Vuk Palibrk on synth and clarinet, she presented parts of her new material that is about to come out soon in her native Portugal. After her performance in Pančevo, she will also have a show at the CRACK comics festival in Rome, in an „occupied culture center“ named Forte Prenestino, one of the largest squats in Europe.
- Rita is an excellent example of „Do It Yourself“ spirit in popular music. You take a ukulele, put it in a small bag and travel to all four corners of the world. It’s more dynamic and affordable then to be followed by a band of musicians. Instead of that, she is often collaborating with local musicians in different countries, this time it was Vuk Palibrk, who is also combining music and visual expression such as comics, illustration and animation… Rita was touring US, France, Belgium, Poland, Portugal, Spain… Before here, she had a show in the neighboring village of Banatsko Novo Selo. It shows you what mobility should be all about – with minimal expense, you can go anywhere and organize a show that can make your ears happy – says Aleksandar Zograf, organizer and conductor of GRRR!Program.
An international crew of cartoonists from Croatia, Sweden, Norway, Macedonia, Portugal, France and Serbia, an interesting bunch of authors and participants to „Novo doba“, have definitely added something to the carnival atmosphere of that evening in Elektrika.
